Lagos to hold LG polls in 57 councils. From Ayodele Samuel The Lagos state Commissioner for Local Government and chieftaincy affairs Prince Rotimi Agusoye the conduct of the state local confirmed election into embattled 57 local council in the state. He said the creation of the 57 local council followed the due process both at the state and federal level. Teslim said “as at today we have 774 local government in Nigeria and 20 from Lagos . The new ones are not yet approved”. AYODELE SAMUEL LG ELECTION Lagos State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has filed a motion on notice at the Ikeja High Court seeking for an order restraining the state government and Lagos State Electoral Commission from conducting elections into the newly created 37 local development councils in the state. Joined in filling as co-plaintiff in the suit are the Senate President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Clerk of the National Assembly. However Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission LASIEC has released the time table of the next local government election in the state. A notice signed by the chairman of the commission Hon. Justice Abdul Fatai Afolabi Adeyinka said the election into the office of chairman and councilor for the 20 local government councils and 37 local development areas of Lagos shall be held on Saturday 11,octuber 2008. Conducts of the parties’ primaries by would commence on Monday July 28 to Monday August 11. He said campaigns by political parties would commence the following day. When the minority leader of the state house of assembly Hon. Suru Avoseh (PDP) was contacted, he said “the party should decide on the issue, as for me no comment.” Adeyinka added that all registered political parties are required to collect nomination forms on behalf of their candidate at LASIEC headquarters. A member of the state house of assembly Hon. Babatunde Adewale Jimoh said it was not necessary for the National Assembly to enlist the newly created local government councils, describing it as unconstitutional. He said the house has enacted a legislation known as Lagos State Independent Electoral Law 2008 which empowers LASIEC to conduct elections into the 37 local development areas. He added that the state has budgeted N1billion for the forthcoming local government polls “why should some people be planning to stop the polls from holding”. DPP SURPORT LAGOS The Lagos state democratic people party governorship candidate in the April 14 general election and party state man Otunba Olusegun folorusho Ibrahim said his party will not boycott the state local government election. Speaking during an interview with LEADERSHIP Olusegun said the party is very strong as before even after the general election and sure of winning local government councils in the forth coming election. He added that the party will not join other parties in Lagos to create problem “those party are creating artificial problem for themselves and DPP will not join them” he said Lagos state by right should have more than 57 local governments due to it population. He said if he had won the election he will create 100 local governments to enable development at the grass root level. He however advice those who are calling for local government election be hold in 20 local council should put party sentiment apart and work towards the development of the centre of excellence Residents of Mosan community area have caution Lagos State government and Nigeria National Petroleum Commission NNPC over exposed pipelines. This appeal followed after a fire incident which gutted a shop very close to an exposed pipe lines at about 2am on Saturday. An eye witness, Alhaji Abass Lawal said he was alerted by neighbours who are making free night calls “when I saw the are a lot of people were running away because of the pipe line but I call them back to kill the fire" Investigation reveals that the shop was own by a baker who plug gas cooker over night. However, the Baale of Mosan Chief Mutiu Kasumu said “he ask them to evacuate the place before the NNPC ask them to evacuate the pipeline extension.” He added that recently some pipeline was vandalise in the area, he call for the government to provide security at the pipeline to ensure safety of the residents. The chairman of Mosan General Community Development Association, Eng. Bimbo Omotosin said he was not around during the fire outbreak, he said the attention of Lagos State government and NNPC to the community particular the local government since CDA deals with local government bus they have show up. Ayodele Samuel Lagos/Visitation The minority leader of the Plateau State House of assembly Hon. John Dabwan has called on Christian in politics to be God fearing and ensure National transformation. He said this at a seminar organized by the Organization of Christian in Democracy (OCD) in the commiserating of the 15th Anniversary of June 12. Dabwan said the annulment of the 1994 June 12 election was an act ordained by God to further his divine purpose for Nigeria even thou man may think they manipulate things. Speaking on the Local Government Election held in his state (Plateau) Hon. Dabwan said the cancellation was due to late arrival of electoral materials in some polling units where election were not held. He furthermore paid a courtesy visit to the Lagos State House of Assembly where he was received by the minority leader Hon. Suru Avoseh amidst other members of the legislature in a warm reception. He said his visit to his Lagos counterpart is to interact and exchange ideas “you know when rub mind with people of other state it will be able to give you excess of direction to build up your own legislature”. Hon. Dabwan also paid a courtesy visit to the Lagos State Action Congress Chairman Chief Dele Ajomale who advice him to be a good ambassador of the party at any level he find himself and foster good relationship between both states party he also ensure him of his support in the political field.
